Family Medicine Residency Program

Family Health Centers

Our Office, Your Patients, Their Community

The UPMC St. Margaret Family Health Centers (FHCs) are the cornerstones of our residency program.  Located in the communities of Lawrenceville, Bloomfield-Garfield and New Kensington in the greater Pittsburgh area, they are nurturing practice settings in which residents develop skills, knowledge and, most importantly, meaningful continuity relationships with patients.

One of the primary goals of each of our FHCs is improving access to the communities they serve.  Each FHC is located in a practice setting with a large patient population that is marginalized, and it is the objective of our residents, faculty, and staff to best meet the needs of all of our patients.

Our FHCs have residents, medical directors, fellows, and faculty physicians who work side by side with nurses, medical assistants, radiology technicians, pharmacists, and social workers to create a team-based environment to deliver patient care.  We offer the full spectrum of family medicine: from prenatal, post-partum, and newborn care, to  well child and adolescent care, women’s health, contraception,  well adult and chronic disease management, geriatrics and palliative care.  A multidisciplinary home visit program serves our homebound patients, and we work collaboratively with hospice programs as well.  We offer many outpatient procedures including skin, joint, and gynecological services.

The FHCs are bolstered by the presence of three fellowships based at St. Margaret: Faculty Development, Geriatrics, and Sports Medicine.  These fellowships provide excellent educational support and learning opportunities for our residents and faculty.

Finally, our Integrated Behavioral Health team of social workers and an onsite psychiatrist provides collaborative care with the primary team -- a level of access to mental health services that is unparalleled and a model to other practices.
