About UPMC St. Margaret
Situated on the northern bank of the Allegheny River, UPMC St. Margaret is 250-bed acute care, community, and teaching hospital serving residents of Pittsburgh’s inner city and adjacent suburbs.
Steeped in history, St Margaret Hospital was established in 1898 in Lawrenceville on the land of the estate of a wealthy iron manufacturer and philanthropist John H. Shoenberger. He bequeathed both the land and the money to establish a hospital in the “loving memory” of his wife Margaret, who was known for her generosity and her many acts of kindness. The hospital was therefore named “Saint Margaret” to honor Mr. Shoenberger’s wife, and not for a particular religious affiliation. In 1980, St Margaret Hospital moved to its current location to be closer to all the communities it served.
UPMC St. Margaret is an integral part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health System. We provide high-quality, compassionate medical care to numerous diverse communities. We have access to the tertiary and quaternary care resources of a world-class academic medical center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. About Our Family Medicine Residency Program
Established in 1971, our Family Medicine Residency Program is rooted in a community hospital that values the critical role family doctors play in hospital, office, and community care. Family medicine is the only residency program based at UPMC St. Margaret, ensuring our residents play an integral role in patient care throughout the hospital—including the intensive care and monitored-bed units.
Our program is nationally recognized for excellence in educating medical students, residents, and fellows. Our residents and graduates actively engage in advocacy, leadership, and teaching at regional and national levels. Affiliations with the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State Hershey, and Temple University, along with strong ties to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee Women’s Hospital, provide our residents with rigorous and diverse clinical training. Specialized fellowships in Family Medicine Faculty Development, Geriatrics, and Sports Medicine further enrich the educational experience.
The outpatient experience is exceptional, with our three Family Health Centers serving medically underserved populations. Residents act as primary family physicians within multidisciplinary teams that include faculty attendings, psychiatry, social work clinicians, and clinical pharmacists. This integrated approach delivers patient-centered care addressing behavioral health and social determinants, alongside traditional medical needs.
Our care philosophy is team-based and community-focused. Residents collaborate with pharmacists, social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, and dietitians to ensure comprehensive care, while partnering with local schools and community organizations to promote population health and equity.
UPMC St. Margaret is also known for its supportive, collegial environment. Residents benefit from regular mentorship with faculty advisors and a Wellness Committee that fosters balance through retreats, social events like the Turkey Bowl, and other community activities. Many graduates remain local, admitting patients to our hospital and serving as preceptors in our Family Health Centers or through the Private Practice Initiative.
