Em Ketterer, MD, is the associate program director for the combined Family Medicine Psychiatry Residency at UPMC. She completed undergraduate at Michigan State University in Social Policy at the James Madison College and medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. She then completed her family medicine and psychiatry training through the combined residency at UPMC St Margaret and Western Psychiatric Hospital. Dr Ketterer also serves as the psychiatrist for the Integrated Behavioral Health team for the St Margaret family health centers. In classic dual-boarded style, Dr. Ketterer has worn many hats: primary care physician, psychiatric emergency physician, consultation-liaison psychiatrist, and crisis-center psychiatrist.
Dr. Ketterer is a passionate advocate for and provider of gender-affirming care as well as weight-neutral medicine. She is certified in menopause care by the North American Menopause Society. Dr. Ketterer cares deeply about resident and physician education on building and maintaining boundaries with work and with patients.
Outside of work, Dr. Ketterer loves powerlifting, house plants, brightly colored clothing and big earrings. She lives in the East End with her spouse, two kids, cat, and dog. Mostly, she loves getting 8 hours of sleep when possible.
