The UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency received initial AOA accreditation in 2002. On June 30, 2020, our AOA-accredited program was transitioned to ACGME Osteopathic Recognition and single accreditation.
A Message from the Director of Osteopathic Education and Core Faculty
Welcome to our Family Medicine Residency Program in Pittsburgh!
At our program, we are proud to uphold the values and traditions of osteopathic medicine while preparing residents for the future of family-centered care. Our faculty—many of whom are dedicated osteopathic physicians—bring a wealth of clinical experience, a passion for teaching, and a deep commitment to mentoring the next generation of family doctors.
We believe in training residents to care for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—while also equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. You will receive hands-on training in diverse clinical settings across Pittsburgh, with opportunities to practice full-spectrum family medicine, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), preventive care, chronic disease management, and community health.
Designated Osteopathic Residents
All osteopathic residents are eligible to enter the osteopathic recognition pathway. Allopathic residents who have also received background training in Osteopathic Principles and Practice may be eligible as well.

- Mentorship from three Osteopathic faculty members: Dr. Lineman, Dr. Bucci, and Dr. Bensur
- Hands-on training, with multiple OMT clinics held across our three family health centers each week. Residents also have the opportunity to provide OMT during their continuity clinics.
- Didactic lectures with Osteopathic focus
- Access to opportunities for Osteopathic scholarly activity
- Preparation to confidently integrate OMT skills in post-residency practices
- Eligibility to achieve board certification by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Osteopathic Family Practice
